What you do after a laser hair removal session matters almost as much as the treatment itself. Good aftercare protects your skin, reduces side effects, and helps you get the best possible results from every session. At Beautissima in Bothell, WA, we send every client home with clear aftercare instructions—and this guide expands on those instructions with the full detail you deserve.

Day-by-Day Aftercare Timeline
Immediately After Your Session
When you leave our Bothell studio, the treated area will likely look and feel slightly sunburned. This is completely normal. Here is what to expect and do:
- Mild redness and warmth. The skin may appear pink or flushed. This typically fades within 2–6 hours, though it can persist up to 24 hours for sensitive skin.
- Perifollicular edema. Small raised bumps around each hair follicle. This actually means the treatment was effective—the follicles absorbed the laser energy. It looks like tiny goosebumps and resolves within hours.
- Apply a cooling gel. We apply aloe vera gel at the clinic, and you should reapply at home if needed. A cool (not ice-cold) compress wrapped in a soft cloth can also help.
- Wear loose, breathable clothing over the treated area. Cotton is ideal. Avoid anything tight, synthetic, or abrasive.
The First 48 Hours
This is the most important window for protecting your skin:
- No hot water. Avoid hot showers, baths, hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms. Lukewarm water is fine for showering. Hot water can inflame already-sensitized skin.
- No exercise that causes sweating. Sweat is mildly acidic and can irritate open follicles. Skip the gym, running, hot yoga, or any vigorous activity for 24–48 hours.
- No sun exposure. Keep the treated area covered or apply SPF 30+ mineral sunscreen. UV exposure on treated skin significantly increases the risk of hyperpigmentation.
- No makeup or scented products on the treated area (if treating the face). Stick to gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer.
- No deodorant on underarms for 24 hours after underarm treatment.
- No tight clothing or friction. For bikini treatments, wear loose cotton underwear. For chest or back treatments (common for male clients), choose a loose t-shirt.
- No sexual activity for 24–48 hours if you had a bikini or Brazilian treatment.
Early Recovery
- Redness should be fully resolved by now. If it persists or worsens, contact us.
- You may resume gentle exercise. Listen to your skin—if the area feels irritated after working out, scale back.
- Do not shave yet. Give the skin at least 3–5 days to settle before introducing a razor. When you do shave, use a clean razor and shave in the direction of hair growth.
- Continue applying gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated.
The Shedding Phase
This is the phase that confuses many first-time clients. Understanding it prevents unnecessary worry:
- Hair appears to "grow." What you are actually seeing is dead hair being pushed out of the follicle. The hair shaft was damaged by the laser but remained below the skin surface. As the skin naturally exfoliates, these dead hairs emerge.
- Do not pluck or wax. Let the hairs fall out on their own. Pulling them can irritate the follicle and interfere with the treatment process.
- Gentle exfoliation helps. After day 7, you can use a soft washcloth or a gentle exfoliating scrub in the shower to encourage shedding. Do not scrub aggressively.
- Black "pepper spots." Tiny dark dots at the skin surface are burned hair stubs working their way out. They will shed naturally.
- You may resume shaving at this point if needed.
Between Sessions
- Enjoy the smooth period. After shedding completes, the treated area should be noticeably smoother and less hairy. This effect lasts until the next growth cycle begins (usually 4–6 weeks for body areas, 3–4 weeks for facial hair).
- Shaving is fine. You can shave as needed between sessions. This is one of laser's biggest advantages over waxing—no grow-back period required.
- Do NOT wax, pluck, thread, or use depilatory creams. These methods remove the hair root, which the laser needs intact for the next session.
- Continue sun protection. SPF 30+ on exposed treated areas. Sunburn or heavy tanning between sessions can affect the safety and effectiveness of your next treatment.
- Stay hydrated and moisturize. Well-hydrated skin responds better to laser treatment.
Sun Protection: The Most Important Aftercare Rule
If there is one rule to prioritize above all others, it is sun protection. Here is why:
- UV exposure increases hyperpigmentation risk. Treated skin is more sensitive to UV radiation. Sun exposure can cause dark spots that take months to resolve.
- Tanned skin changes your laser settings. If you arrive for your next session with a tan, we may need to reduce energy levels to avoid burning—which means less effective treatment.
- Mineral sunscreen is preferred. Look for zinc oxide or titanium dioxide—these sit on top of the skin rather than being absorbed, making them less likely to irritate freshly treated skin. SPF 30 minimum, reapplied every 2 hours when outdoors.
For clients in the Pacific Northwest, this is especially relevant during summer months. Bothell gets more sun from June through September than many people expect, and even overcast days deliver UV radiation.
Beautissima Tip: Plan Your Treatment Schedule Around Summer
If you know you will be spending a lot of time outdoors in summer—camping, boating on Lake Washington, hiking in the Cascades—consider starting your treatment plan in fall or winter. This gives you several sessions of progress before peak sun season, and you can schedule a break during the highest UV months if needed.
Products to Avoid After Laser
For the first 48–72 hours after each session, avoid applying the following to treated skin:
- Retinoids / retinol. These increase skin sensitivity and can cause peeling on already-sensitized skin.
- Glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and other AHAs/BHAs. Chemical exfoliants are too aggressive for freshly treated skin.
- Benzoyl peroxide. Drying and irritating on post-laser skin.
- Vitamin C serums (high concentration). Some people tolerate these fine, but high-concentration formulas can sting on sensitive skin. Resume after 48 hours.
- Fragranced lotions and perfumes. Fragrance chemicals can cause irritation or contact dermatitis on sensitized skin.
- Self-tanning products. These can interfere with your next session and may cause uneven coloring on treated skin.
- Alcohol-based products. Toners or aftershaves containing alcohol will sting and dry out treated skin.
Products That Are Safe and Helpful
- Pure aloe vera gel (without added fragrance or alcohol)
- Gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer (CeraVe, Vanicream, La Roche-Posay Cicaplast)
- Mineral sunscreen SPF 30+ (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide based)
- Cool compresses if needed for comfort
Exercise Guidelines
We know many of our Bothell clients are active—whether it is trail running at North Creek, cycling along the Burke-Gilman, or hitting the gym. Here is when you can safely resume:
- 0–24 hours: No exercise. Rest the treated area.
- 24–48 hours: Light activity only (walking, gentle stretching). No activities that cause sweating in the treated area.
- 48+ hours: Resume normal exercise, including vigorous workouts and cardio. If the treated area still feels sensitive, listen to your body.
- Swimming: Avoid pools (chlorine) and ocean water for 48–72 hours. Hot tubs should be avoided for at least 72 hours.
The concern is not exercise itself but rather sweat, friction, and bacteria. Open follicles are temporarily more susceptible to folliculitis (infected bumps), and sweating in those follicles before they have closed creates a higher risk.
Understanding the Hair Shedding Process
Hair shedding is one of the most misunderstood parts of laser hair removal. Let us break it down clearly:
- During treatment, the laser energy is absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft, converting to heat that damages the follicle's growth cells.
- The hair shaft remains in the follicle after treatment. It was not vaporized—it was damaged at the root.
- Over 7–21 days, the body naturally pushes the dead hair out through the skin surface. This is called shedding.
- The shed hairs look like stubble as they emerge. Many clients mistake this for regrowth. It is not—it is dead hair exiting the body.
- After shedding, the skin in the treated area is smooth and hair-free (for the follicles that were in the active growth phase).
- New growth appears 3–6 weeks later, but these are hairs from follicles that were dormant during the previous session. Each subsequent session targets more of these previously dormant follicles.
By understanding this cycle, you can appreciate why multiple sessions are necessary and why the treated area looks different at different points between sessions.
What Is Normal vs. What Is Concerning
Completely Normal
- Mild redness lasting up to 24 hours
- Perifollicular edema (small bumps around follicles) lasting 1–3 days
- Slight warmth or tingling for a few hours
- Hair stubble appearing 7–14 days after treatment (shedding)
- Mild itching during the shedding phase
- Patchy hair loss pattern (not all follicles are in the same growth phase)
Less Common but Still Normal
- Redness lasting 2–3 days (more common on sensitive skin or with higher energy settings)
- Mild crusting at follicle sites (especially in coarse-hair areas)
- Temporary lightening or darkening of the skin in the treated area (usually resolves within a few weeks)
Contact Us If You Experience:
- Blistering or open wounds
- Intense pain that does not subside within hours
- Signs of infection (pus, increasing warmth, spreading redness)
- Severe swelling
- Significant skin color changes that persist beyond 2 weeks
These are rare, especially with the Cynosure Clarity II's precision technology, but if they occur, contact Beautissima promptly. We are available at (206) 960-6190.
Aftercare by Treatment Area
While the general aftercare rules apply everywhere, some areas have specific considerations:
Face (Upper Lip, Chin, Sideburns)
- No makeup for 24 hours. Mineral makeup can be resumed after 24 hours if the skin has calmed.
- Use a gentle cleanser (micellar water or a cream-based cleanser) for the first 2–3 days.
- SPF is critical—your face gets more incidental sun exposure than any other body part.
Underarms
- No deodorant or antiperspirant for 24 hours. Switch to a gentle, natural deodorant for the first few days.
- Wear a loose top—tight sleeves can cause friction.
Bikini and Brazilian
- Cotton underwear only for 48 hours. Avoid thongs or tight synthetic fabrics.
- No sexual activity for 24–48 hours.
- If swimming is planned, wait at least 72 hours.
Legs
- Avoid tight jeans or leggings for 24 hours. Loose pants or a skirt are better options.
- Be cautious with leg shaving for the first 3–5 days—let the redness resolve first.
Back and Chest (Men)
- Loose, breathable shirts. Avoid backpacks or tight sports bras/compression wear for 24–48 hours.
- If you work a physically demanding job, consider scheduling treatment before a rest day.
How Aftercare Affects Your Overall Results
Good aftercare is not just about comfort—it directly impacts your results:
- Sun protection prevents complications that could delay your next session. If you arrive tanned, we may need to postpone or reduce energy levels.
- Not waxing or plucking preserves the hair root for the next session. If you remove the root between sessions, the laser has nothing to target.
- Consistent session timing (every 4–6 weeks) catches the maximum number of follicles in their active growth phase. Delaying sessions means fewer follicles are in the optimal phase.
- Proper hydration and skin care keeps the skin in optimal condition for treatment, allowing us to use the most effective energy levels safely.
