Your First Laser Hair Removal Session: What to Expect
Walking into your first laser hair removal appointment can feel a little intimidating. You are not sure what the machine looks like, what it will feel like on your skin, or whether you will walk out red and splotchy. That uncertainty is completely normal.
This guide walks you through the entire experience at Beautissima in Bothell, WA, from what to do in the days before your appointment to what your skin will look like in the weeks after. No vague reassurances. Just a clear, honest walkthrough.
Before Your Appointment: Preparation Checklist
What you do in the days leading up to your first session matters. Proper preparation makes the treatment more effective and more comfortable. Here is exactly what we recommend:
2 to 4 Weeks Before
- Stop waxing, plucking, and threading. These methods remove the hair root, and the laser needs that root intact beneath the skin surface to work. Without it, the laser has nothing to target. Shaving is fine because it cuts the hair at the surface and leaves the root in place.
- Avoid excessive sun exposure. Sunburned or freshly tanned skin is more sensitive and harder to treat safely. If you have been out in the sun, let your skin return to its natural tone before your appointment.
- Discontinue retinoids and chemical exfoliants. Products containing retinol, tretinoin, glycolic acid, or salicylic acid increase skin sensitivity. Stop using them on the treatment area at least two weeks before your session.
24 Hours Before
- Shave the treatment area. This is the single most important pre-appointment step. The laser targets the pigment in the hair beneath the skin surface. If there is hair above the surface, the laser energy gets absorbed by the visible hair instead of reaching the follicle, which reduces effectiveness and can cause surface burns. Shave the night before or the morning of your appointment.
- Skip lotions, deodorant, and makeup on the treatment area. Come to your appointment with clean, product-free skin in the area being treated. Residues can interfere with the laser and create unnecessary irritation.
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. After treatment, the skin in the treated area may be slightly sensitive. Loose clothing prevents friction and irritation.
What about numbing cream?
You are welcome to apply a topical numbing cream (like lidocaine) 30 to 45 minutes before your appointment. Most clients find the Clarity II comfortable enough without it, thanks to its integrated cooling system. But if you are nervous about pain, especially for sensitive areas like the bikini line, numbing cream can help take the edge off. Ask us for product recommendations when you book.
The Consultation: Your First 15 Minutes
At Beautissima, every new client starts with a free consultation. This is not a sales pitch. It is a clinical assessment that helps us plan your treatment safely and effectively. Here is what happens:
Skin Assessment
We evaluate your Fitzpatrick skin type, which tells us how your skin responds to light. This determines which wavelength we use (755nm Alexandrite or 1064nm Nd:YAG) and what energy settings are appropriate. If you have darker skin, we will always use the Nd:YAG wavelength, which is specifically designed to be safe for Fitzpatrick types IV through VI.
Hair Assessment
We examine the hair in your treatment area. The laser works best on hair with high melanin content (dark brown to black hair). We will be honest about what results you can expect based on your specific hair color, texture, and density.
Medical History Review
We ask about medications, skin conditions, and any history of reactions to light-based treatments. Certain medications, including some antibiotics and hormonal treatments, can make skin more photosensitive. We need to know about these before we begin.
Treatment Plan
Based on the assessment, we outline how many sessions you will likely need, how they should be spaced, and what results to expect. For most treatment areas, we recommend 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart.
Test Patch (If Needed)
For clients with darker skin tones, those taking photosensitizing medications, or anyone who requests it, we perform a small test patch. This involves treating a thumbnail-sized area at conservative settings and evaluating the skin response over 24 to 48 hours before proceeding with a full session.
The Treatment: Step by Step
Here is exactly what happens during your first laser session, from the moment you sit down to the moment you leave:
Area Preparation
Your technician will clean the treatment area to remove any remaining product or debris. If you missed a spot while shaving, they may do a quick touch-up. The area being treated needs to be completely clean and dry.
Settings Calibration
Based on your consultation, your technician selects the appropriate wavelength, fluence (energy level), pulse duration, and spot size on the Clarity II. These settings are customized to your skin type, hair type, and treatment area. The machine displays all parameters on its screen, and your technician may explain what they are selecting and why.
Eye Protection
Both you and your technician will wear protective eyewear. Laser light at the wavelengths used for hair removal can cause eye damage, so this step is non-negotiable. If the treatment area is near your face, you may wear opaque goggles or eye shields instead of glasses.
The Treatment Itself
Your technician places the Clarity II handpiece against your skin and begins delivering pulses. The handpiece includes an integrated cooling system that blows chilled air onto your skin before, during, and after each pulse. This significantly reduces discomfort. You will feel a sensation with each pulse, often described as a warm snap or a quick rubber-band flick. The handpiece moves systematically across the entire treatment area, overlapping slightly to ensure complete coverage. Treatment times vary by area: underarms take about 5 to 10 minutes, a Brazilian takes 15 to 20 minutes, and full legs take 30 to 45 minutes.
Post-Treatment Assessment
After treating the entire area, your technician will examine your skin. Mild redness and perifollicular edema (small bumps around the hair follicles) are normal signs that the treatment is working. These typically resolve within a few hours. Your technician will apply a soothing aloe gel or calming serum and provide aftercare instructions.
What It Actually Feels Like
The most common question: does it hurt? The honest answer is that it depends on the area, your pain tolerance, and how much melanin is in your hair. Here is a realistic pain scale based on what our clients at Beautissima report:
- Underarms: 3 out of 10. Mildly warm, occasionally a quick snap. Very tolerable.
- Lower legs: 2 out of 10. Most clients barely notice it. The cooling makes a huge difference.
- Upper lip: 5 out of 10. The face is more sensitive, and the small area means concentrated sensation. Brief but noticeable.
- Bikini line: 4 out of 10. Moderately warm with occasional sharper snaps in areas with denser hair.
- Brazilian (full): 5 to 6 out of 10 for the first session. This is the area most clients find most intense. However, it decreases significantly after the first 2 to 3 sessions as the hair density reduces.

Aftercare: The First 48 Hours
What you do after your session is almost as important as the session itself. Here is your aftercare checklist:
- Apply aloe vera or a gentle soothing cream to the treated area as needed. Avoid heavy or fragranced moisturizers for 24 hours.
- Avoid heat for 24 to 48 hours. No hot showers, hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, or intense exercise that causes heavy sweating. Your skin is in a mild inflammatory state, and heat will prolong it.
- Do not pick at or scratch the treated area. You may notice small red bumps. These are normal and will resolve on their own.
- Apply SPF 30 or higher daily to any treated areas exposed to sunlight. This is important for all skin types but especially critical for darker skin tones to prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
- No waxing, plucking, or threading. You can shave between sessions, but do not remove the hair root. Let the treated follicles do their thing.
- No retinoids, glycolic acid, or other active skincare on the treated area for at least 5 to 7 days after treatment.
The Timeline: When You Will See Results
Here is the realistic timeline for what happens after your first session:
- Day 1 to 3: Mild redness and possible slight swelling. The area may feel like a mild sunburn. This subsides quickly.
- Week 1 to 2: The treated hairs are still in place but are no longer growing. They will begin to shed naturally. You might notice what looks like stubble pushing out of the skin. This is not new growth; it is the treated hair being expelled from the follicle.
- Week 2 to 3: Shedding is usually complete. The treated area will feel noticeably smoother. You may see patchy areas where some hair remains. This is normal because the laser only targets hair in the active growth phase (anagen), and not all hair is in this phase simultaneously.
- Week 4 to 8: New hair that was in the dormant phase during your first session will begin to grow in. This is when you are due for your second session. You will notice that the regrowth is thinner and sparser than before.
After 6 to 8 sessions, most clients see 70 to 90 percent permanent hair reduction. For a deeper look at why multiple sessions are necessary, see our article on how many laser sessions you need.
Common First-Session Concerns (and Honest Answers)
"What if I did not shave well enough?"
Your technician will trim any remaining hair. It is not a problem. Just do your best, and we handle the rest.
"Can I go back to work right after?"
Absolutely. There is no downtime. You might have mild redness that looks like a slight flush, but it fades within a few hours. Most clients return to their normal schedule immediately.
"What if I take medication?"
Disclose all medications during your consultation. Some medications, particularly certain antibiotics (like doxycycline) and isotretinoin (Accutane), require us to delay treatment or adjust settings. This is a safety issue we take seriously.
"I am nervous about the pain."
That is completely normal. The Clarity II's cooling system makes a significant difference, and most clients are pleasantly surprised at how manageable the sensation is. If you are particularly anxious, we can start at lower settings and increase gradually, or you can apply numbing cream beforehand.
"What if it does not work for me?"
Laser hair removal is effective for the vast majority of clients with dark hair and any skin tone. It is less effective on very fine, light-colored (blond, gray, or red) hair because the laser targets melanin. We will be upfront about expected results during your consultation. We would rather set honest expectations than overpromise.
